8 Steps to Waxing A Car

However, this was not the solution to all the issues. Given some time and usage, and the clear coat used to get all oxidized and dull to look at.

Then, the car waxes came like a blessing to the owners! Car wax is basically a sealant for the clear coat to protect the paint from accumulating dirt or getting easily scratched.

So, why do you need to wax your car regularly?

Thanks to the long-term protection of the wax, the cars can now look all shiny and glossy for the longest time. Besides, when you skip the step of waxing after washing the car, it will start showing the dirt sooner than usual. 

Even the paint will start fading faster than usual because of the constant exposure to the sun that it gets. Of course, there are elements of UV protection in the clear coat, but even that needs replenishment from waxing.

1. Let’s start with washing the car before anything else

It is best to use specialized car-washing products for the cleanup because dish or laundry soaps can strip off the protective coating from the surface of the car.

Take one section at a time while washing, and go from the top to the bottom. Hose an area, lather up the soap in that portion, wipe it with the cloth, and rinse using the hose. Wash the cloth thoroughly with the hose and start the next section. Easy does it, right? 

Once all the sections are cleaned, rinse the whole body of the car with water and let the car air dry completely before we move on to polishing.

2. Moving on to polishing the car for maximum shine

After your car is thoroughly clean, you can start polishing it. You can move on to waxing the car directly too, but it is best to polish it first.

Now, polishing and waxing are two different things, which many people get confused about. It is absolutely necessary to polish the car if you want to get maximum gloss and shine when you finally begin waxing.

The car polishes that you get in the market nowadays are basically abrasive substances which have a kind of particulate that are known as diminishing abrasives. Diminishing abrasives is the technical word for abrasive particles in the car polishes. These substances breakdown into fine particles as you begin polishing, which makes it unnecessary to go for multiple grades of polish.

Now, the nitty-gritty of polishing a car is a whole other topic, which is best kept for another day. Just keep in mind that polish needs to be applied annually to smoothen out the clean coat on the surface of the paint. It is also helpful in clearing uneven buildups or irregularities of wax on the coat of the paint’s finish.

Glazes don’t have the abrasive grits that you see in polishes. It is actually a blend of kaolin and oils that enhance the gloss. Its purpose is to fill in all the imperfections of the car surface and offer it an undistorted and even reflective body.

Regardless of whether you go for glazing or polishing the car, you will have to ensure that the wax coat is applied immediately after it. It will help in protecting the clear coat that has come up while you were polishing the car. Otherwise, you are just leaving your car to accumulate dirt on the clear coat that you were trying to avoid in the first place.

Time to wax the car by one of the given methods

By now, you have completed washing the car completely and applied a glaze or polish, and the surface of your car is all cleaned up and dry. It is finally time to seal off all that hard work with the proper application of car wax.

In terms of waxing the car, there are two ways to go about it. You can either apply the wax and buff it by hand or apply the wax and buff it a power buffer. So, here are the remaining steps for both these methods.

Method I: Buffing it by hand

1. Keep the car in a shaded area: The car wax must be applied in a shaded area. It will prevent the wax from drying out too fast while it sits on the car and becoming difficult to buff off later on.

2. Ensure that the car is absolutely dry: Water droplets on the car paint can lead to streak which you will find difficult to buff off later.

3. Apply a thin coat of car wax: Basically, the thinner the coat that you apply, the better results you will get. The shine should technically come from multiple layers of wax and not just one heavy layer of wax. Buff off the thin layer before applying another thin layer, and that’s how we go. 

Check the instructions on the label of the product to know the time gap you should leave between two layers. It should typically be somewhere between twelve to eighteen hours.

4. The use of a poly-foam applicator: The best thing about poly-foam applicators is that these help in coating the wax thinly and evenly. These are reusable, washable, durable, absorbent, and most importantly, inexpensive. So, no need to be in two minds about throwing one out when it is too filled with sealants to be of any use.

5. The microfiber cloth for polishing the haze: The high-end microfiber towels are great for buffing out the sealant and getting a mirror-like polish. The fibers in these towels are static-charged so they grab any waxy residue easily and don’t leave lint behind. So, there is nothing left behind to ruin the surface of the car wax.

Keep rotating the towel as you go by folding it to make sure that too much wax does not build up as you go on. Otherwise, it will just cake up and leave streaks.

6. The final detailing to remove unevenness: The finish needs a final spritz from detail spray and then some buffing with a clean microfiber cloth, and you are done!

Method II: Buffing it with a Power Buffer

1.Take a foam finishing pad for applying wax: The pad that you pick needs to be soft and absorbent, but firm enough to take the pressure which the power buffer is going to give it. Check the local hardware store, or auto parts outlet. Chances are that they will have the wax applicator pads for buffering.

2. Spread the wax paste on the applicator pad: It’s just as you spread butter over bread every morning! It is best to flip the jar of wax paste over a plastic bag for holding it as you spread a layer over your buffer pad. You can use putty knives for that matter, as well.

If you are using liquid wax, the best thing you can do is to squeeze out three lines of three-inch each on the edges of the buffer pad. The rest will be taken care of as you rotate the buffer

3. Spread the liquid wax with a power buffer: If working with liquid wax, spread the car wax around using the power buffer before you turn on the machine. It will help in reducing the chances of creating a mess as soon as you flick on the switch.

4. Keeping the settings right: Do not start using the liquid wax blindly without checking the directions regarding its use with power tools. As a rule of thumb, the dual-action polishers must be set at three or lower.

5. Spreading the wax evenly: You will have to spread the wax all over the panel that you are working on to make sure it is evenly covered. Make sure to turn the power buffer off before lifting it from the finish. Loads to people have learned this lesson the hard way. You surely would not want to be one of them.

6. Polishing it using a microfiber towel or polishing pad: There are sealants that allow you to wax the surface before buffing it out with a microfiber towel. But, you run the risk of having difficulties with buffing if you cure it out too quickly.

If the wax actually says that it can be applied to the whole body before buffing, just for some extra cover put a microfiber cloth over a lamb’s wool pad. Keep in mind that it is better to use microfiber because terry clothes leave lint.

With 38 million lawn mowers being used in the United States (and increasing) my need for a lawnmower was just another statistic for manufacturers of this equipment. However, it was something different for me because I was making an investment to clean my garden and mow the extra grass in my backyard.

I did not want to make an investment in some equipment that was visible in practically every other household. I was determined to have a lawnmower which could not only help me to clear the extra growth of grass in the backyard but wouldn’t also need maintenance frequently. My backyard was moderately large and in the region of half an acre. The grass covering the area was thick and unless it was mowed down regularly it had the potential to make my backyard appear as a dump. I wasn’t intending to leave my backyard unattended and therefore decided it was essential for me to mow down the lawn in order to keep the backyard looking beautiful.

I was aware I simply had to visit the hardware store and pick up a lawnmower before I began cleaning up my back yard. I certainly preferred the battery-powered lawn mower despite its higher cost because it was environmentally friendly and was easy to use.   • It needs significant maintenance.
  • It is not environmentally friendly because of carbon emissions.

  • It can be difficult to start.
  • It requires a pre-start-up routine similar to vehicles for checking oil and gas levels.

The pros of the gasoline-powered lawnmower made me wonder whether this was the model I should be looking forward to purchasing. The pros had everything in their favor but having a moderate size garden made me wonder whether I was prepared to torture myself with the loud noise every time I began mowing the grass. The fact that it was heavier meant that significant effort would be needed on my part during the mowing. The gasoline-powered lawn mower gave me a feeling that I was purchasing a second vehicle rather than some equipment simply to clear the grass in my backyard.

After collecting information about the pros and cons of lawnmowers of both varieties I began making a comparison between the two in order to understand which one I should be choosing. I had only considered the basic pros and cons of both the models and favored the battery powered lawnmower because it was environmentally friendly. However, I hadn’t considered the fact that purchasing a battery-powered lawnmower simply doesn’t mean that I can use it and put it away. I still had to ensure I cleaned it after every use and paid proper attention to the battery. I had to understand that if the batteries are left unattended they could fade away quickly. I didn’t have the option of leaving the battery-powered lawnmower sitting in extreme temperatures for extended periods of time. I had to keep watch over it regularly if I didn’t want the lawnmower to be dead when I need it most during the spring.

The gasoline-powered lawnmower was easier to put away in the winter and forget about it because it requires attention wherever it is being used. Considering that it was easier to use and maintain I almost made up my mind to invest in the gasoline-powered lawn mower but did not arrive at a decision until I also considered the following facts.

Having a discussion with my friends gave me information that a well-maintained lawn mower should last me for at least 8 to 10 years and therefore I was advised to ensure I was comfortable with the decision I made when selecting a model for myself.

I was advised to make a list of what my needs were along with the kind of yard I had. My backyard was moderate in size and therefore I was advised that a battery-powered lawnmower may not be suitable for my garden.

As my backyard was moderate with thick clumps of crabgrass the only option available to me was to consider a gasoline powered lawnmower. After I finished showering, I always made it a point to turn it off knowing full well I could be liable to pay extra money if I didn’t turn off the shower appropriately. I was however surprised a month ago when I observed late in the day that the shower in my bathroom was leaking. It wasn’t leaking the day before, and therefore I was confident it was a recent development. I wanted to understand why the shower was leaking even after I had turned it off fully after I used it in the morning. The easiest option available to me was to call in a plumber who would bring some expense on me. Rather than spend money to fix a leaking shower, I decided I would do it myself by gathering information from different websites

Why Does A Shower Head Begin Leaking?

I was aware I could get my hands dirty trying to fix a leaking shower head. However, I was determined not to waste money on the repairs when all I had to do was fix a leak. However, I still had to understand why the shower was leaking. I began realizing that shower leaks usually start with the shower head or the faucet. The cause of the leak wouldn’t be visible until I attempted to fix both the head and the faucet of the shower before calling in a plumber.

The research conducted over the Internet led me to a couple of reasons which could be the prime reason why the shower head was leaking. I gained information that the process for fixing a leak is constant regardless of the type of shower heads I was using. The reasons though looking simple and likely to be overlooked by most people who face a similar problem in their bathrooms. I was determined not to make the same mistake and gathered information that may shower head was leaking because of any one of the following reasons.

  • – The shower head was clogged.
  • – The O-ring had worn off.
  • – The diverter valve was either malfunctioning or needed cleaning.
  • – A malfunctioning cartridge valve needed replacing.

Irrespective of the problem I was facing it was sure I needed to have a set of tools in my possession before I could even consider fixing a leaking shower head or even looking into the actual reasons why the shower head was leaking. This information set me on the path of collecting the tools which included a towel, plastic washers, rubber O-ring, pliers, a large bowl, distilled white vinegar, a crescent wrench, an old toothbrush, and some Teflon tape. I could begin my task of fixing the leaking shower head once I had the tools mentioned above in my possession.

Stopping A Leak In The Shower Head

I first began by trying to shut off the water supply to the shower head. I was hoping I would be able to do so just to the shower head, but unfortunately, I could not and therefore had to shut off the water supply to my entire place. I then covered the drain and the bottom of the shower with a large towel. Then came the tricky part of removing the shower head which I tried to unscrew with my hands. 

I did not succeed, and therefore I had to use the pliers and the crescent wrench to remove the shower from the wall. Initially, I checked to understand whether the rubber washers or O-ring had worn off and needed replacement. Fortunately, they were in good shape, and I only had to re-wrap the threads on the pipe with the Teflon tape to seal any gaps with the shower head and piping.

As the washer or the O-ring were in good condition, I began paying attention to the showerhead. I had been living in the same place for quite some time and was sure that it could be clogged with lime and mineral deposits that may have built up in the holes. I had a solution to fix this problem as well as I just needed to submerge the showerhead in a bowl of vinegar and leave it there for approximately eight hours. I could either submerge the entire showerhead or remove the showerhead faceplate. 

I managed to remove the faceplate but decided to immerse the whole shower head to ensure I did a thorough job of stopping the leak in my bathroom. After eight hours I used the old toothbrush for scrubbing between the nozzles and then dried the showerhead with a clean towel. After completing the cleaning, it was time for me to reattach the showerhead back to its position. I tightened the showerhead with my hand initially and then with the pliers and wrench. However, I did not fasten it too tightly as I had decided I would never again submit myself to the luxury of viewing a leaking shower head.

As I turned on the water to understand whether the shower was still leaking, I was disappointed to observe the leak hadn’t stopped which was an indication I had a bigger problem to deal with. It led me to believe that the faucet cartridge may need replacement and I set my mind on completing this job as well.

Replacing The Faucet Cartridge

As it was the case with cleaning the shower head, I had to shut off the water supply of my place and again had to cover the drain and bottom of the shower with a large towel. Initially, I removed the handle cap with a tiny pocket knife. I had to apply a little pressure before it came off to show me a screw. After that I had to remove the handle screw with a screwdriver along with the retaining clip. It appeared like a small metal horseshoe on top of the cartridge. It was necessary for me to remove the retaining clip for replacing the cartridge. I lifted it with a tiny screwdriver before removing the washer surrounding the bar in the middle.

The next step for me was to unscrew the hex screw and nut with the wrench. I had arranged for a replacement cartridge which was the same as the one I removed. I just had to align the new cartridge in its place and complete the installation by using the steps in the reverse order. After I was done with this job, I merely had to turn on the water and the shower to ensure I had taken care of the leaks.

Fortunately, it was one of those days when things worked fine for me because I had done everything in my power to fix the leaking shower head. I was given information that any further problems would have required help from a plumber which would have cost me some money. At the end of it, I got into my favorite pastime to have a luxurious shower all over again content with the knowledge that I had learned how to fix a leaking shower head.
